America's Founding Myths...And What REALLY Happened
Christy Mihaly,
Marta Sevilla (Illustrator)
Barefoot Books
Much of the history that I was taught as a child has been disproven. This fun middle grade nonfiction explains that history is in essence a story. Recorded history is often based opinions from just one side and do not tell the full story. Schools now try to balance what is taught, and this book would make an excellent addition to the classroom. This book presents several events that most Americans except as fact that compares the myth to the actual facts. Some of the events are simply partial truths and others are complete myths based on fiction. The book encourages children to question what they learn and look for additional sources. It encourages children to look for balanced reporting. These are traits that are not only important in learning history, but in awareness of current events. The day and age of balanced news reporting based on researched facts has come and gone. Kids learn about the world from the internet, and not everything is accurate. If a reader takes the authors advice to heart, then they will learn to question what they read and look for the whole story, making them well informed citizens when they grow up.

Daughter of Montague #3
Teach the Torches to Burn
Christina Dodd
I love the very funny Daughter of Montague series. In this irreverent retelling, Romeo and Juliet survived and their eldest daughter is a sleuth. Book three just released yesterday and I can't wait to read it.

Creativity and Courage
The Paper Princess
by Elisa Kleven
Tiny Torch Books/ Collective Book Studio
A gust of wind sends a handmade paper princess flying. “Wait! I didn’t finish you,” cries the little girl who made her. “I’ll finish myself,” calls the princess as the wind carries her away—
Elisa Kleven combines a simple sweet story with beautiful detailed multimedia illustrations in a book that little ones will adore. The story about a paper doll who gets carried away on the wind tells the tale of an creativity, adventure, friendship, finding oneself and returning to home and family. The beautiful illustrations of town, carnival, and meadow are full of details that both children and adults will want to pour over. The town has a diverse population with a variety of skin tones. Each window in the town peaks into people eating, playing, or going to bed. Readers can play I spy, looking for doll houses, rocking horses, and goldfish. One family eats spaghetti and watermelon, and another celebrates Shabbat. My little one loved the happy ending and the detailed pictures and yours will too.
