Barbara Lehman-Golomb has written an adorable picture book that will delight the little ones. This Sukkot book introduces the concept of Sukkah hopping as families visit different sukkahs. The catchy rhymes have an easy rhythm that invites the listener to chant along. The cute illustrations by Talia Drigues complement the author's text perfectly as kids learn about many Sukkot activities: decorating a sukkah with either arts and crafts or gourds, waving the lulav and etrog, eating and partying, and enjoying the sukkah under the stary sky. The pages are filled with people of different complexions and all ages and several animals.
I shared this book with my preschool aged grandchild who is learning to read. The predictable text makes it easy for preschoolers to predict the phrase at the end of each rhyme. I liked the fact that the words "Sukkah One" up to "Sukkah Four" are in extra large blue font making it easy to reinforce the word sukkah and the counting words for early readers. My grandchild enjoyed the catchy rhymes and loved looking at the details to see the animals antics. Even a few tiny birds get into the act! We read a downloadable review copy from the publisher on a tablet, but I can't wait to add the print copy to my bookcase!

The projects look like they would actually take longer than 10 minutes, but they will make a great diversion for any craft minded child. Teachers will love using this book and the others in the series tie into science units about ecology. The projects could also be used for ocean day or earth day.

What if you were the only muggle at Hogwarts?
Spindlewood by Freddie Kölsch is engaging middle school academy fantasy which is an absolute delight. It takes the chosen one trope and turns it upside down. Lilac Black finds herself at a secret school for seers, but she can't actually see ghosts. When a white lie, turns into a misunderstanding, the prospect of a school for seers is impossible to resist, and she continues the charade. The author weaves together the very normal problems of living a lie and middle school friendship drama with the fantasy adventure of living on an island filled with ghosts. Lilac is a fun character, she is smart and friendly. The classmate who seems the friendliest at first, is actually a social queen and the clique treats the true seer who seems somewhat hard to know as an outcast. They are jealous because of all of Em's special privileges. But through Lilac, the reader sees that people's lives are not always what they seem at first. Eventually we realize that the narrator is a ghost, and sometimes she breaks the fourth wall to talk directly to the reader. The residents may be able to SEE the beyond, but some things at school are hidden. Lilac finds a diary and begins to research the secrets that lay underneath the school.
Fans of magic academy or ghost stories will love Spindlewood. It is one school they will want to return to. I can't wait for the next story in this adventure.
