This beautiful picture book explores the probable origins of Memorial Day. This historical fiction follows a young boy as he participates in the activities at the Washington Race Course. one of the worst Confederate prisons. Thousands of people gathered to honored the fallen Union Soldiers who lost their lives. Henderson uses various quotes to weave together a moving story. The book was beautifully illustrated by Floyd Cooper. The award winning artist was famous for his depictions of various Black people. His unique technique of oil erasure created luminescent paintings that are true works of art.

Kids will love the story with a woolly dog who searches for fluff that can be used to warm the family of people he lives with. The adventure takes him from a search for fireweed fluff to a conversation with a shrew and then a flight on the back of a giant eagle to the top of a mountain to gather goat wool. The afterward provides information about the wooly dog and the custom of blanket weaving.
