International Agatha Christie She Watched

In 2024, Teresa Peschel published a fantastic reference book for fans of the famed author, Agatha Christie. Agatha Christie She Watched contains reviews of over 200 Agatha Christie video adaptations. Peschel reviewed the productions but also rated them for how closely they stayed true to the original Christie story.

I reviewed Agatha Christie, She Watched by Teresa Preschel last May. When I received the review copy for the blog tour, I also received the 2025 International edition. Today is the book birthday for that sequel: International Agatha Christie She Watched.

The Only Comprehensive Worldwide Guide to Agatha Christie Movies

The Anthony Award nominated Agatha Christie, She Watched reviewed 201 movie and TV episodes in Britain and America, but the Queen of Crime’s influence didn’t stop there.

This sequel covers 129 movie and TV episodes from around the world, including China, Estonia, France, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and Sweden. See Poirot recast as a crusading lawyer in the Republic of China era, an action-hero cop in southern India, and a comic detective in Japan. Miss Marple appears in a Japanese anime aimed at children, a motherly woman in India, and an escaped murderer (or is she?) in South Korea.

Through the camera lens, we see how people from another culture interpret Christie’s stories, and we see aspects of their culture reflected in them. It’s a worldwide mystery tour conducted from the comfort of your couch.

The “International Agatha Christie, She Watched” also

● Reviews of 11 documentaries about Christie’s life and works, and David Suchet and the Agatha Christie’s Poirot TV series.

● Appendices listing adaptations of Christie’s stories worldwide, radio plays, documentaries, works starring Christie as a character, board and video games, and non-fiction works.

● Photo galleries starring actors and actresses who played Poirot, Miss Marple, and Tommy and Tuppence.

Agatha Christie is one of the world’s most popular authors. These two volumes prove how deeply her stories have become a part of the world’s cultures.

International Agatha Christie She Watched
by Teresa Peschel

As Miss Marple says, “Very few of us are what we seem.” (Partners in Crime). That can also be said for Agatha Christie adaptations. A few years ago, Teresa Peschel wrote the definitive book on Agatha Christie adaptations. Agatha Christie, She Watched: One Woman’s Plot to Watch 201 Christie Adaptations Without Murdering the Director, Screenwriter, Cast, or Her Husband is an encyclopedia of all the English language tv shows and movies plus a few foreign films with English subtitles. She not only reviewed each movie but examined how closely it resembled the original story. Several shows not only changed the plot but switched sleuths! Sometimes the only similarity seemed to be the title. I found that book fascinating and it will be invaluable if I am thinking about watching an old Agatha Christie movie.

In her international edition, she examines many foreign videos with English subtitles. Agatha Christie’s novels have been translated into many languages. The queen of Mysteries is almost as popular in other countries as she is in English speaking countries. She found that these show often reflected the common standards and views of the country and that they could be far different from the source material. Many times Christie’s sleuth was missing all together and the story had become a police procedural. Even if you never plan on seeking out the foreign films to watch, the book is still fascinating to read. Who knew that Poirot had been adapted for anime?

I received both editions of this series for review purposes and I am thrilled to have them. I can honestly recommend them for Agatha Christie aficionados. I had fun reading them and expect to use these movie guides as reference for years to come.

About Teresa Peschel

Teresa Peschel

Teresa Peschel never planned to become a writer, nor did she plan to become an expert on film versions of Agatha Christie stories. Then, as a supportive wife, Teresa read and edited Bill’s annotations to Agatha’s first six novels. A desire to promote the books led to writing movie reviews for the Peschel Press website, which led to Bill suggesting they could publish a collection quickly. Two and a half years later, Agatha Christie, She Watched was born. This book got Teresa — and Bill as her supportive husband — an invitation to speak at the 2024 Agatha Christie festival in England.

Like Agatha Christie, Teresa reinvented herself and because of Agatha Christie, she’s become a better writer.

Peschel Press publishes a variety of complete annotated classic mystery novels and are dedicated to publishing “the history behind the mystery.”
