Flimflam Fairy is Fabulous
Sometimes a reader can envision a story in such detail that they feel like they are transported into that world. In Elizabeth Pantley’s series members of the “Magical Mystery Book Club” don’t just read the book, the literally step into the story to solve the crime. In her new “Magical Cozy Mystery Bookstore” spinoff series she takes the concept further and shows how those magical books are chosen for the club members. In “Flimflam Fairy”, best friends, Willa and Lucy are determined to enjoy their retirements. While vacationing in a town seemingly chosen at random, they discover a charming cozy mystery store that just happens to be available. But when they go to finalize the sale, they discover the strings attached. They will become premier readers for the magical mystery book club. Each time they open a new untitled magical book, they will find themselves in the middle of a mystery. They will decide if the story is good enough for the magical mystery collection. I love the premise of these series! This spinoff easily stands on its own. As a first time reader of this author, I found that the book provided all the background I needed. Each story will provide a new setting and the author is a master at world building. In “Flimflam Fairy”, Willa and Lucy were swept into Whisperglow village. The inhabitants seem just like humans except for their colorful wings and hair. The homes are built into the trees and hillsides. Pantley’s characters are engaging. Willa and Lucy are great characters. Lucy is an exuberant impulsive fun-loving lady, who sometimes acts more like she is six than in her sixties. She is ready to dive in to any situation. Best friend Willa is more staid, logical and methodical. They make a great team. But they are not swept into their adventures without a guide, They are accompanied by Banjo, a talking cat who has been on these adventures for a very long time. Lucy and Banjo immediately take to each other and the byplay between them is a delight. I can’t wait to see more of the side characters back at their bookstore. This volume is full of twists and surprises. Even the crime that they need to solve takes a turn. Once the trio transport home, they can get back to real life at the book store. But there will always be another adventure waiting for them. The premise allows the author to explore a variety of locations, but I enjoyed meeting the residents of Whisperglow so much, that I hope that they get to revisit it again in the future. I received a downloadable advanced copy of this book for review purposes, but I am hooked. I can’t wait to read more of this series. Anyone who loves a cozy mystery with a touch of magic will adore “Flimflam Fairy” too,
