There’s nothing magical about midlife for Abby McBride, unless dealing with pesky ghosts counts.
Between hot flashes and brain fog and the dead paying a call at all hours, she’s had her share of spirited mayhem, while trying to hold up a perfect image among her cul-de-sac crowd. Not easy! But, after decades of suppressing her psychic gift, it all comes crashing down at the annual Halloween bash and her quiet suburban life goes up in spectral smoke.

Abby McBride never said “I see dead people”. Because she learned at a young age to keep it a secret. Not even her husband knows that she is psychic. Stephanie Plum meets “The Sixth Sense” in this lighthearted paranormal women’s fiction. When a middle aged stay at home mom, goes to a Halloween party at a literal haunted house and things get out of hand, she needs to reveal her secret to save her friends. The plot itself could be scary and this could be a horror story except for all the humor that is woven into the story. The protagonist’s inner monologue, her wise cracking self deprecating humor, and snide remarks from some of the side characters, both living and dead add a light touch that relieves the tension in scenes that would otherwise be quite tense. Much like many cozy mystery main characters, the protagonist often barrels into situations without thinking things through. If you like paranormal stories with a bit of middle age real life thrown in, this book is a winner. Abby has been suppressing her talents for years, so she is on a bit of a learning curve now that she has to deal with something serious. This looks like it is the first book in a new series, and I can’t wait to see this middle aged mom take on more sinister spirits in the future.
About KC Freeman

After leaving the corporate world to raise her five rambunctious children with her husband in North Carolina, KC Freeman eventually found her way back to her lifelong desire to write paranormal fiction.
First, she dipped her toes in the writing world by ghostwriting cozy mysteries and romance novels. Once confident of her creative writing skills, she struck out on her own to write urban fantasy and paranormal romance with her debut novel, Rekindled Prophecy: Greylyn the Guardian Angel Book 1. A few books later, KC added the label, “USA Today Best-Selling Author” with her paranormal romance, Renegade Angel, incorporated into the Realm of Darkness box set.
KC writes mostly urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She also spends a lot of time editing manuscripts with her company, Book Mage Editing, and is certified by the Professional Book Editors Association.
Now that her five children are grown and flown, KC spends her time writing, editing, reading, hiking, exercising (in an attempt to get back a semblance of her pre-menopause body), and spoiling her fur baby chihuahua, Harley
INTERVIEW WITH KC FREEMAN
How did you get started as a writer?
Oh, it was a long process. Stories filled my head since I was a child. I pecked out stories and screenplays on my mom’s electric typewriter since I was in elementary school. Guess that dates me a bit. I wanted more than anything to be an author when I grew up. Then reality set in and I did what was expected of me: college (in a major that bored me to tears but the job security was fabulous!~ according to my parents who insisted I major in accounting); career; marriage; children; working mom-life chaos; then we moved and suddenly I was a stay-at-home mom. Once all the kids started school I began to wonder, “Now what?” That’s when it hit me! I could finally work on becoming an author! So, I did. At first, I took on freelance ad hoc jobs for content creation. This led to ghostwriting. Then (after being stiffed on my payment for a novel I ghostwrote) I decided it was time to write and publish as myself. It took three years and over thirty-six drafts later before my debut novel was published, but I did it!
You primarily write urban fantasy or paranormal romance. Psychic in Suburbia is a bit different. It has a paranormal element, but isn’t a romance. This main character is a middle-aged woman with a stable marriage. The focus is on self-acceptance and coming in to her power. Why the switch to Paranormal Women’s Fiction?
Paranormal romance is 99% about the young female protagonist kicking supernatural booty while a swoon worthy guy waits in the wings, helps her, or is her sworn enemy (my favorite trope is enemies to lovers). But let’s face it. I’m at a stage in life where I feel my connection to that genre is more nostalgic than anything. I couldn’t “connect” with my character as much as I used to. Abby McBride (my protagonist in Psychic in Suburbia) is around my age, has similar family, friends, circumstances, etc. In summary, I can relate in a way. I was delighted to see a book trend leaning toward heroines/heroes who are no longer in their prime and dealing with life and drama by kicking @$$ and not bothering to take names because they are of the age where “We Do Not Care Anymore!” And I LOVE that!
What inspired this story?
Oh… that’s complicated. As above, being in midlife myself I connected with my protagonist immediately. The words flowed onto the page like water from a broken hydrant. Her insecurities resounded with my insecurities. Abby is braver than I am though. I guess writing it out was my therapy. There were some real-life inspirations which served as plot bunnies ~ such as every year hubby and I go to a Halloween party hosted by some friends of ours. I’ve always got spooky vibes off their house so… insta-inspiration! (Disclaimer: The party only serves for the catalyst of the story. All events, people, places, etc. are fictional.)
Your brief author’s bio describes you as a sports mom. Is Abby based somewhat on you? How else are the two of you alike?
Oh, Abby and I are quite a bit alike. We connect like best friends. I understand her fears, her anguish, her frustrations, her hot flashes and her migraines. I am a sports mom. Five children and we’ve been involved in pretty much every sport there is (except maybe curling). Hubby volunteered coached wrestling (not baseball). I am very, very, very familiar with the world of travel little league baseball.
Have you always been a fantasy reader? Who was your favorite author when you were young?
Always! I started reading horror. If people say I’m spooky it’s because I was reading Stephen King and Anne Rice from an incredibly early age. I also absorbed any books I could find at the public library on the supernatural. Hubby actually introduced me to JRR Tolkien when we were dating (in my twenties). It was much later I discovered “Angelology” by Danielle Trussoni and from that moment I devoured fantasy fiction, primarily if it was angel romance.
Psychic in Suburbia seems to be the first book of Magical Midlife Misadventures of a Medium Mom. However, there are places in the book with backstory that seemed to be recaps from previous stories. Did Abby appear in a short story anthology?
I hope to make this a series, but each book will be able to stand on its own. My first few drafts had much more backstory, but I decided to string it out so I can elaborate on some instances in later books.
When can we expect book two? Can you tell us anything about it?
Whether or not it becomes a series will depend on the success of this first book. I have draft outlines for a few stories. The next book would be about the house at the end of the first book where a scary poltergeist wreaks havoc on sweet family. The poltergeist wasn’t there before they moved in. Let’s just say that the angst of the living fuels more negative energy than any haunting, but that doesn’t make it any less supernaturally real.
Thanks so much for having me. I hope you and your readers enjoy Psychic in Suburbia.
