Michelle L. Cullen

Michelle L. Cullen has lived and traveled all over the world, from working as a bilingual secretary in Paris to backpacking around Europe, Central America, and Southern Africa to helping rebuild communities after war throughout Africa, East Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific — where she saw the best and worst of human behavior. Her lifelong fascination with people and why they do what they do, was further fueled by her academic training. She obtained her PhD from the London School of Economics’ Sociology Department and her master’s degree in anthropology from Melbourne University in Australia.

A fan of adventure, she has a black belt in Taekwondo, has summited 900 feet rock climbing, snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, and hiked up an active volcano. She currently lives in Annapolis, Maryland, where she’s either doing yoga, playing outside, or plotting murder. She’s a proud member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, and The Authors Guide, and has been gleefully reading and watching murder mysteries since the age of ten.

Once upon a time, as The Storybook Lady I was a professional storyteller, bringing children's books and folktales to life. Now decades later I am a book blogger. As the title implies, my favorite genre is children's literature. But I am a voracious reader and I review a variety of genres. Come back often to see the next chapter!

Celebrate World Chocolate Day today and learn a little about the beginnings of the revolution that gave birth to our Independence that we just celebrated by reading

THE BOSTON CHOCOLATE PARTY
by Tami Lehman-Wilzig and Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz
Illustrated by Fede Combi

This sweet book combines American history, the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and American's love of chocolate in fantastic picture book. The story takes place in December 1773 shortly before the Revolutionary War. Colonists were turning to hot chocolate as an alternative to imported tea which was no longer affordable due to the heavy taxation. This story introduces that time in history in a framework of Sephardic Jews celebrating Hanukkah. The comparison of the colonial uprisings to the Maccabees is pure genius. The story is beautifully illustrated by Fede Combi with amazing attention to authentic Colonial detail. Children's author Tami Lehman-Wilzig and chocolate maven, Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz, author of On the Chocolate Trail have teemed up to provide an entertaining and educational book that is perfect for either Hanukkah or studying the American revolution.

Happy Independence Day!

Here are six of my favorite children’s books for Independence Day.
What are your favorites?

Fourth of July
Emma Carlson Berne
Luke Flowers (Illustrator)
Joseph Faison (Songwriter)
2018 by Cantata Learning
This simple picture book shows several holiday activates in an original jazz song.

Jokes for Independence Day
Jane R Davis
2025 by Gareth Stevens
This cute book combines photos and information about the Declaration of Independence with cute drawings and corny jokes that kids will love.

Looking For Uncle Louie on the Fourth of July
Kathy Whitehead
Pablo Torrecilla (Illustrator)
2005 by Boyds Mills Press
This is a simple story of a young boy watching the fourth Of July parade and watching out for his Uncle Louie who is supposed to surprise him has an added South western twist and illustrations showing the diversity of the American people.

Lady Liberty's Holiday
Jun Arena
Illustrated by Matt Hunt
Published May 10, 2016 by Knopf Books for Young Readers
Did you ever feel like you really need a vacation and you just need to get away? The statue of liberty decides to go off and see the country. This funny book pictures her at all the sites. This makes a great fourth of July story, but your kids will want to read it again and again.

What Emma Wrote:
The Woman Behind the Words on the Statue of Liberty
Ann D. Koffsky
Illustrated by N. Tarcan
2026 by Apples & Honey Press
This is a fantastic picture book biography about Emma Lazurus, the poet who wrote the words inscribed on the base of statue of liberty.

Red White and Boom
by Lee Wardlaw
Illustrated by Huy Voun Lee
2012 by Henry Holt and Company
This fantastic book is one long list poem made of descriptive short sentences mentioning all the things on scene at the holiday celebration. The papercut illustrations are adorable.
