Solly and the Elephant: A Folktale from the Bene Israel of India
by Sandy Eisenburg Sasso
Illustrations by Siona Benjamin
Apples & Honey Press
Solly and the Elephant is an ancient folktale that centers on faith and kindness to animals. Author Sandy Eisenberg Sasso has adapted this Bene Israel folktale into a picture book that any child can enjoy. The gorgeous illustrations by Siona Benjamin capture eighteenth-century Bombay with vivid detail.
As a small child, Solly visits the Maharaja's palace and befriends a baby elephant and calls him, Mitra which means friend. The story follows the friendship as the two grow. Eventually, a cruel elephant trainer mistreats the animal and the elephant is turned out into the wild. When Solly is framed for theft and must face wild elephants as punishment, fate provides the answer for he faces his old friend Mitra.
This Jewish folktale centers on his recitation of the Shema and kindness to animals is a fundamental Jewish tenet. But it is also a universal idea cherished among all cultures And the theme that kindness comes back to you is one that all children can appreciate.

ABC's of America's Freedom
Alyssa Wedemeyer
Cornelius Kuncana (Illustrator)
Glory Era Publishers
ABC books are not just for preschoolers anymore. Alyssa Wedemeyer uses an alphabet book format to teach the revolutionary war to young students in a manner that makes the topic approachable. These bite sized lessons introduce a variety of concepts without overwhelming children with the topic. short paragraphs and cute illustrations present everything from the American flag, Franklin and Washington to lesser known facts like Invisible ink, Native Americans siding with the British, and the Quartering act. I read this book as part of an Instagram Book Tour, but I can honestly recommend it for teachers and home school history lessons as well as Independence Day reading.
