The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun
Loose at School
Laura Murray,
Mike Lowery (Illustrator)
This cute story is part of the gingerbread man on the loose series. The gingerbread man isn’ being chased, he is doing the chasing, trying to catch a crafty leprachaun. Kids will love the well written rhymes and the silly humor. Beware of literal potty humor, that will set preschoolers into a fit of giggles.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Crayons
Drew Daywalt,
Oliver Jeffers (Illustrator)
Green crayon decides to go on vacation, and the rest of the box must help color St. Patrick’s Day symbols without him. I found this little book amusing and adorable. There is juvenile silliness like the leprechaun needing underwear that will delight preschoolers. But there are also crayon characters that will make older readers smile.

How to Catch a Leprechaun:
A Saint Patrick’s Day Book for Kids
Adam Wallace,
Andy Elkerton (Illustrator)
This is a delightful, clever picture book that will entertain school age children as well as the little ones. The rhymes are catchy and the bright, colorful pictures jump off the page. The title is a misnomer. The book illustrates how NOT to catch a leprechaun. In each home, children have set an intricate trap that the sly leprechaun slips past. There is so much detail to examine, children will want to analyze the traps and figure out why they failed. In the end of the book, the leprechaun says that maybe someday, some clever kid will catch him. Parents or teachers can challenge children to design their own leprechaun traps. This book would make a great seasonal launch pad for a science activity.

St. Patrick’s Day, Here I Come!
David Steinberg,
Emanuel Wiemans (Illustrator)
This picture book celebrates the holiday with several different poems. Although preschoolers will appreciate the book, it is actually great for older kids too. Teachers can use it in March to launch some interdisciplinary lessons. Most of the poems explore legends and customs associated with the holiday, But one poem provides a geography lesson, and another defines a limerick. The poems follow a variety of rhyme patterns and would make a great lesson about poetry.
