All Who Are Hungry, Come and Eat!:
A Passover Story
Leslie Kimmelman, illustrated by Alyssa Russell
“All who are Hungry, Come and Eat!” is a delightful Passover story based on the iconic line in the Haggadah. This clever story weaves the Jewish tenets of hospitality and charity with some of the most important Passover details and Leslie Kimmelman’s usual humor. When the extended family who usually attend the Seder can’t make it, Ethan worries if a small seder with only the immediate family would be enough. The long table has four place settings one each for Ethan, his Mom, Dad and his dog Sadie. He thinks the table is much too big. But his parents remind him of the verse which invites anyone in need to join and says that maybe they will have unexpected guests, And indeed they do! Each time there is a knock on the door, Ethan wonders if it might be Elijah. Then he opens the door and repeats the titular phrase “Let all who are hungry , come and eat.” Kids will love joining in on the refrain. Eventually, the table is surrounded by guests. Family, friends and neighbors include both human and animal. Almost everyone brings a treat, and the table is filled with a variety of food. I loved the whimsy of the cat bringing gefilte fish and the chicken a basket of eggs. But the best bit is when a bear shows up empty handed and the mother reminds him that he may eat anything ON the table but not AROUND it.

The Curious Case of the Pot Roast: A Passover Mystery
Jamie Kiffel-Alcheh,
Menahem Halberstadt (illustrator)
Passover is a night with four questions, but some kids are always asking questions. The child in this book has such an insatiable curiosity, that he is asks one question after another. The patient adult refrain is always “What do you want to know right now?” This child wants to know why mom cuts the ends off the pot roast that they are having for Seder. Mom’s answer is “because that is how my Mom always made it.” That is not a satisfactory answer to the mystery for this deerstalker hat wearing miniature Sherlock Holmes. This warm funny story follows the child in search of the answer, as he asks Grandma and then Great Grandma. Her answer teaches people that sometimes one follows a tradition with out thinking to ask why. The illustrations in this story are cute and colorful. The characters are adorable and the older generations may have grey hair but are still active. I love the details in the illustrations. The best ones are the illustrations of the buildings that are seen at the beginning and end of the book. The store signs along the street are all clever Passover puns. The book does not recount the Passover story, it is a story of a loving family that lives and works and celebrates together. It is a story of a family that values a child’s curiosity, always answering the question if they happen to know the answer. And most important, it is a story that lets us know that there are always more questions.

The Miracle of Matzah Pizza:
A Biblical Tall Tale
Matzah mia! Ann Koffsky has outdone herself with this very funny Passover tall tale. Those first few bites are indeed “crunchy, munchy and marvelous”. However, as the holiday of Passover progresses, plain matzah can get boring and people find different ways to make it tasty. In this funny story, as Zayde teaches his grandson how to make matzah pizza, he spins a story about the supposed biblical origins of this tasty treat. His creative retelling of the actual Exodus provides a few Passover facts along with the silliness. Koffsky captures the senior storyteller with an authentic voice that made me smile. The book alternates between Zayde with Sammy and the story that Zayde is telling. This technique lets us know that even Sammy realizes his grandfather’s story isn’t real. Koffsky’s illustrations, as always, are a delight. The afterward includes a recipe so kids can make their own matzah pizza. Kids will eat up this story and may become giggling gourmets as well. You can learn more about the author’s career and many of her recent books on my Interview with Ann Koffsky.

A Fun Passover Story That Celebrates Who You Are
Yaffa Turgeman, Mick Inspin (Illustrator)
The Passover symbols come to life and celebrate by dancing. Yaffa Turgman’s rhymes tell the story about each symbol who dances in its own way, twirling, fluttering or stomping. The Matzah thinks that she can’t dance, but is encouraged to express herself. The afterward encourages parents to have kids do their own Matzah Cha Cha. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Just like the seder plate symbols, kids can each move in their own way. This great interactive book will get your kids moving and send the message that we are all special in our own way.
