Julie Ditton

The Storybook Lady

Once upon a time, as The Storybook Lady I was a professional storyteller, bringing children's books and folktales to life. Now decades later I am a book blogger. As the title implies, my favorite genre is children's literature. But I am a voracious reader and I review a variety of genres. Come back often to see the next chapter!

On One Foot
by Rinat Primo, Yael Albert (Illustrator),
June Amikam (Translator)
Green Bean Books

On One foot is a sweet story about friendship from one of Israel's favorite children's authors, Rinat Primo. Lily wants to stand "On One Foot", but every time she reaches the count of three she loses her balance. " One, two , three, WHUMP!" But she keeps trying over and over. Brought to life in English by translator June Amikam, kids will love the repetitive phrase. The illustrations by Yael Albert show a busy playground and if you look closely, you can see expressive faces. At first Lily is upset when Hillel tries the challenge too. It is only when they accidently lean on each other, that they both manage to keep their balance. This tale of perseverance shows how competition can change into cooperation so that everyone can succeed.

I AM RARE

by Melissa White Boyer
Marcin PiwowarskI, illustrator
Yuni Press

"I am Rare" by Melissa White Boyer is a rare book indeed. The author, who's own child had a rare genetic condition, saw the need for a picture book that could reframe genetic conditions as rare, not wrong. Narrated by a young boy with this difference, the catchy rhymes and colorful pictures explain genes in a way that little ones can understand. The author points out that they are a blueprint for making you unique. Any child can understand that genes make your hair, smile or height the way they are. But the sentence that explains superpowers as mutations was perfect. This book talks about differences, identity and belonging and is ideal for any child with disabilities. But any child can understand both the science of genes and the message that what makes them unique makes them special. My inquisitive preschool listener liked the science but also loved the glowing heart in the illustrations. This sweet book will make your heart glow too.

HOP ON INTO SUKKAH

The Sukkah Hop
Barbara Lerman-Golomb,
Talia Drigues (Illustrator)
Green Bean Books

Barbara Lerman-Golomb has written an adorable picture book that will delight the little ones. This Sukkot book introduces the concept of Sukkah hopping as families visit different sukkahs. The catchy rhymes have an easy rhythm that invites the listener to chant along. The cute illustrations by Talia Drigues complement the author's text perfectly as kids learn about many Sukkot activities: decorating a sukkah with either arts and crafts or gourds, waving the lulav and etrog, eating and partying, and enjoying the sukkah under the stary sky. The pages are filled with people of different complexions and all ages and several animals.

I shared this book with my preschool aged grandchild who is learning to read. The predictable text makes it easy for preschoolers to predict the phrase at the end of each rhyme. I liked the fact that the words "Sukkah One" up to "Sukkah Four" are in extra large blue font making it easy to reinforce the word sukkah and the counting words for early readers. My grandchild enjoyed the catchy rhymes and loved looking at the details to see the animals antics. Even a few tiny birds get into the act! We read a downloadable review copy from the publisher on a tablet, but I can't wait to add the print copy to my bookcase!
